Disk Space Left Over, Version 2.0, Copyright Rob Hueniken 1994

LeftOver is a small Visual Basic 3.0 program that can show the
amount of free disk space available on one or more drives. It
usually runs as an icon, but also has a full size display.

LeftOver is a good program to include in your Windows Startup
group, to provide constant disk space usage information.

Installation
============

To install the program, run the SETUP.EXE program from the
Windows Program Manager file menu. It will prompt for the target
destination, which defaults to C:\LEFTOVER. The total size of
files is about 170,000 bytes. The actual LEFTOVER.EXE is only
26,000 bytes.

The installation and running of LeftOver requires that you have
VBRUN300.DLL on your hard drive. This file is usually in your
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory and is part of Windows 3.1 as well
as Visual Basic 3.0. The previous version of LeftOver (1.01)
used VBRUN100.DLL.

Features
========

This new version 2.0 is an upgrade of version 1.01, and provides
the following, additional features:

1) You can now select the time interval between the checking of
   the free disk space. This is entered in the Setup screen, and
   is saved between sessions in the LEFTOVER.INI file. In addition,
   the time interval is visible on the main screen. The value
   is the number of seconds, and can be 1 or greater, such as:

     1 = 1 second, 60 = 1 minute, 3600 = 1 hour, 86400 = 1 day

   I have found that an interval of 30 to 120 seconds provides
   a good balance of timeliness and accuracy. Values as low as
   1 to 10 seconds are more for experimenting or monitoring a
   critical and dynamic disk space situation.

2) You can stop and start the disk space checking from the main
   screen.

   The main screen shows whether the timer is Running or Stopped,
   as controlled by the Stop/Start button on the main screen.

3) You can elect to show the total free disk space on the icon.
   This is set in the Setup screen by clicking on the "Total on
   icon" check box. When running as an icon and more than one
   drive is being checked, the total free disk space in megabytes
   will be shown surrounded by "( )".

   In the Setup screen, clicking on OK invokes the new settings.
   Clicking on Cancel reverts to the settings used prior to
   entering the Setup screen.

4) The new Setup screen has a number of features for selecting
   the drives you want to check. A set of drive type check boxes
   lets you pick the general types of drives you want to examine
   (Hard drives, Floppies, CD-ROM/Network drives, and RAM drives).

   Depending on which types of drives you want to check, a
   number of specific disk drives will be shown as check
   boxes. You can select some or all of the drives, and the
   selection will be saved between sessions.

   A drop-down disk display is located in the bottom right of
   the Setup screen. It simply presents a list of the drives
   showing their disk labels and a graphic depiction of the
   drive type.

   Note: If you include any floppies in your disk checking and do
         not have a floppy in the selected drive then the disk space
         value will show "Err".

5) The icon caption is only updated when the disk space changes.
   This allows screen savers that monitor the screen to be used.

6) The last position of the main screen is saved between
   sessions in the LEFTOVER.INI file. This lets you put the
   main screen where you want it and have it always return
   to that location.

Files in the distribution kit
=============================

The 7 files in the LFTOVR.ZIP file are listed here with their
usual location on your system. The first 4 files are installed
on your hard drive:

1) LeftOver.exe The program (any directory you choose)
2) LeftOvr.dll     Subroutines (usually C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM)
3) Ss3d2.vbx       Custom controls (usually C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM)
4) Readme.txt This file, which doubles as the Help.

5) Setup.exe Run this to install LeftOver
6) Setup1.exe Part of the installation
7) Setup.lst Part of the installation

An eighth file, LeftOver.ini, is created in the C:\WINDOWS
directory to maintain the customizations between sessions.

Note that version 1.01 of LeftOver used LeftOvr.vbx. This file
is no longer used.

Freeware
========

LeftOver is Freeware. You can make copies and distribute them as
long as all of the files are kept together and unaltered, and no
profit is derived from its distribution.

If you find LeftOver useful, you might try WinSince. WinSince is
a file management automation program, also by Rob Hueniken. It
is a list-based file manager that lets you search for files, and
then run any DOS or Windows program on the list of files. It is
very customizable, has won a number of programming contests
and received excellent magazine reviews. The current version,
4.5, lets you search files for words and assign file management
tasks to icons. It is available as shareware on CompuServe in the
CIS:WINSHARE area as WINSNC.ZIP, or registered from the author
for $25.
