COMTest -- Serial Port Test Program

COMTest allows you to check the status of the serial ports on your com-
puter. It shows which ports are active, the hardware vectors that are in
use and whether an Avery Personal Label Printer is detected on one of the
ports.

To run COMTEST:

1. Exit from any shell or menu program. If possible, remove any memory-
   resident programs (TSRs) from memory.

2. Type CD \AVERY to change to the AVERY directory. (Type CD \AVERYDM
if you are running LabelPro Dot Matrix.) Type PLP and press Enter. When
the Personal Label Printer screen appears, verify that the PLP version
number is 1.62. If a version number lower than 1.62 appears, install ver-
sion 1.62 or higher.

3. Insert the Personal Label Printer disk into your floppy drive and log
on to that drive. Type COMTEST and press Enter.

4. A screen similar to the one below will appear (your screen may be
slightly different from the example):

			Avery Dennison
		    Serial Port Diagnostic
			 Version 4.00

Serial Port COM1 found Personal Label printer connected
 Vector: 0f08:0087 PLP program loaded

Serial Port COM2 found Unknown Device connected
Vector: 0f08:006F Possibly used by another application

The COMTEST screen shows two lines of information for each of your
computer's COM ports. The first line shows the port identification
and the device that is connected to the port. The second line shows
the interrupt vector associated with the port and the software that
is using that vector.

If your printer and the PLP software are installed correctly, COM
TEST will show the Personal Label Printer and the PLP program both
associated with the same COM port, as it does for COM1 in the ex-
ample above. If COMTEST shows the PLP program using a vector as-
sociated with a different COM port, go to the PLP Main Menu, choose
Utilities, enter the correct COM port, and run COMTEST again.

If COMTEST shows an unknown device connected to the port where the
Personal Label Printer should be, turn the printer off and on again
by pressing the printer's On/Off button twice. Run COMTEST again.

If COMTEST still shows an unknown device connected to the port where
the Personal Label Printer should be, that COM port is in use by
another device and cannot be used for the Personal Label Printer.
Reattach the printer to a COM port that shows nothing connected,
change the COM port setting on the PLP software Utilities menu, and
run COMTEST again.

If COMTEST continues to show unknown devices connected to all ports
after you turn the printer off and on, your computer may need an
additional COM port installed in order to use the Personal Label
Printer. (COMTEST may show the message "Possibly used by another
application" for the vector associated with the Personal Label
Printer's COM port. This message indicates the COM port's interrupt
vector is being shared with another COM port. Sharing the interrupt
should not affect operation of the Personal Label Printer.)
