Refs 7.0
========

6 October 1993

Introduction
------------

Refs is a program for creating browsing and maintaining academic
reference databases. The program uses the common ASCII Unix refer file
format and so is compatible with Unix refer, and also bibliography programs
such as WinRefer.

Refs can also import data files in other formats, in an easily expandable
way. Modules are supplied to read ISI and Medline files.

It is shareware, and the distribution should contain the following files:

        REFS.EXE The program itself
        REFS.HLP The help file
	REFS.INI	INI file
TEST.REF	Example Unix refer data file
	IMPBIDS.DLL	BIDS (ISI) Import DLL
	IMPMED.DLL	Medline Import DLL
	IMPCHEM.DLL	Chemical Abstracts Import DLL
        BWCC.DLL Borland's custom control library
        README.TXT This file

The program will work with Windows 3.1 or higher.

Changes since Refs 6.32:
-----------------------

Lots of them! This is a major change, possibly the biggest in any release of
Refs.

* MDI Interface, and associated cut/paste between bibliography windows. This has
resulted in two new drop-down menus, Edit and Window.

* Edit form changed considerably:
   1) Journal title box is now a drop down combo box to allow storing of
      frequently used journal names
   2) New 'Ok and New' button, for rapid entry of multiple references.

* Bibliography menu removed (functions either moved elsewhere or are now
  obsolete).

* Bibliography now consolidated to a single window, with formatted and list
  display toggle.

* Many file menu options are now obsolete and have been removed (such as 'save
  displayed references').

* Various and sundry bugs fixed: Reference sorting, dialog behaviour and others.

* Bug in IMPMED.DLL fixed. It doesn't ignore the abstract any more. :-)

* New Chemical Abstracts DLL supplied by Mats Villi

Installation
------------

You will need PKUNZIP 2.04 or later to extract this file.

1. Copy the files REFS.HLP, REFS.EXE and TEST.REF into any directory.
TEST.REF is merely an example data file and may be deleted.

2. Copy IMPBIDS.DLL and IMPMED.DLL to the same directory, or another directory
on the path. If you do not require these DLLs, delete them and remove their
   entries in REFS.INI.

3. Copy BWCC.DLL into your WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. If you have a more recent
version already from another program, use that, and ignore this step. Use
File, Properties... in File Manager to find the date the file was created.

4. Copy REFS.INI into either your WINDOWS directory or the same directory as REFS.EXE
This is important. Certain parts of Refs will not work correctly if REFS.INI cannot be
   found, or is incomplete.

5. That's it.
