                     *** Red Baron Tournament X ***

                             OFFICIAL RULES

This Tournament is designed for Red Baron Mission Builder. It will not
work if you have only the standard Red Baron software. There are ten
custom missions. You will fly ten different German aircraft. There is
NO practice! Each mission you fly is a valid attempt. You MUST _score_
each mission once and only once. You MUST have ten scored missions, one for
each aircraft, to have a valid entry. Instructions for scoring missions
are listed in rule 3 below. There are two divisions of competition,
A and B. Read all the rules below carefully, before you fly a mission!

 1) This tournament will be run on the honor system, and all participants
are honor bound, as officers in the Deutsch Fliegertruppe, to abide
by these rules and report all results accurately, as if you were
    under oath. Cheaters never prosper!

 2) This ZIP is designed to be unzipped into your Red Baron directory
using the -d option of PKUNZIP. You should have entered the command:
PKUNZIP -d RBTN10 from within your Red Baron directory. The ten
custom mission files will be placed into the \CUSTOM subdirectory
under your Red Baron directory. When you are ready to activate the
Tournament mission record file, run the included batch file, RBTN10.BAT.
Your current ROSTER.DAT will be copied to ROSTER.XXX, and the official
mission record file, ROSTER.T10, will be copied to ROSTER.DAT. You must
use the official mission record file for scorekeeping. Once you have
activated the official mission record file, you are participating in the
tournament. You may not practice any single missions once the tournament
is active. You must fly the missions in order, from A to J.

 3) The procedure for flying a Tournament mission is as follows:
    a) From the MAIN MENU select SINGLE MISSION.
    b) From the SINGLE MISSION menu select FLY A CUSTOM MISSION.
    c) At the bottom of the FLY A CUSTOM MISSION menu, select REALISM PANEL.
See rule 6 for realism settings in A and B divisions. Set your
       OVERALL DIFFICULTY percentage accordingly.
    d) From the FLY A CUSTOM MISSION menu use the arrow keys to select your
next RBTNY10x missions. Read the mission briefing before flying.
    e) At the bottom of the FLY A CUSTOM MISSION menu, select BEGIN.
    f) Answer YES to "Would you like save this mission to a tape?"
    g) Fly the mission to the best of your ability. When the mission is over,
decide if you want it to be one of your ten scored missions. See
Rule 4 below for the differences between A and B divisions, regarding
       the scoring of missions.
    h) IMPORTANT - The way you end the mission and the menu choice you pick
determine whether the mission will be scored or not. The menu choices
RESTART MISSION, ABORT MISSION, and CONTINUE FLYING will never score
a mission. If your mission score is greater than zero, RETURN TO BASE,
END MISSION, and CONTINUE (if dead) will score the mission. Be careful
not to score a mission you don't want scored!
    i) IMPORTANT - If you want to exit Red Baron without scoring the mission,
press <Ctrl><Esc> and answer Y to the question EXIT TO DOS? You may
also exit by flying a mission to a point where you are in combat or
have a critically damaged aircraft. Press <Esc> and choose ABORT
MISSION. You will be taken back to the MAIN MENU where you can select
       EXIT TO DOS.
    j) You may choose CONTINUE FLYING from the MISSION IS OVER menu and land
at your home aerodrome for extra points. Home aerodromes are listed
       in the mission briefings.
    k) If you are NOT scoring the mission, CANCEL the save of the tape. You
may NOT save any unofficial tapes. You may NOT fly a Tournament
mission from a saved tape in an attempt to improve your score. All
Tournament missions MUST be flown from the CUSTOM MISSION menu!
    l) If you ARE scoring the mission, name the tape the same as the custom
mission (e.g., if you flew mission RBTNY10A, name the tape RBTNY10A).
       SAVE the tape.
    j) If you ARE scoring the mission, select CONTINUE on the MISSION
DEBRIEFING menu. Select OK on the CONGRATULATIONS menu. Type your
name (up to fifteen characters) on the ENTER YOUR PILOT'S NAME menu
and select ACCEPT. Do not select CANCEL if you have changed your
mind and don't want to score the mission. Cancel will still score
the mission and enter (Anonymous) as the pilot name. If you made a
mistake, press <Ctrl><Esc> and answer Y before selecting ACCEPT.
The mission is officially scored once you have selected ACCEPT!

4) The Tournament consists of ten custom missions. They are named RBTNY10A
through RBTNY10K. Mission briefings are displayed as you use the arrow
buttons on the FLY A CUSTOM MISSION menu. You must fly the missions in
alphabetical order. Print the MISSIONS.TXT file for a brief mission
summary of all missions. Use it as a checklist to track which missions
    you have already scored.
    a) If you are flying A-division, you are allowed one attempt at each
mission. You are also allowed two "mulligans", that is, opportunities
to start a mission over. Once you have used up your mulligans, you are
allowed one attempt at the remainder of your missions. You must score
your missions immediately upon their completion.
    b) If you are flying B-division, you are allowed three attempts at each
mission. There are no mulligans in B-division; you already have three
attempts to make good on any mistakes or misfortunes. You do not have
to use all three attempts for a mission. If your first or second
attempt was satisfactory, score it and go on to the next mission.
Once you have scored each mission, your Tournament file is complete and
you may not make additional entries. You can see which missions have
already been scored by selecting BEST MISSIONS on the SINGLE MISSION MENU.
When you are finished, there should be ten entries with your name. Each
entry should have a different aircraft.

 5) At any time you may alter either of the DETAIL LEVEL settings, GROUND
or AIRCRAFT, on the F10 PREFERENCES menu. Lower detail (slider left)
will improve your frame rate. The TIME SCALE slider must be set at the
longest tick mark, just right of center, above the "S" in the word SCALE.
You may NOT change the setting of TIME SCALE while participating in the
Tournament. You may set the GROUND DETAIL OFF IN COMBAT.

 6) A DIVISION: All missions must be flown at overall difficulty 100.

B DIVISION: All missions must be flown at overall difficulty 81*, with
    the following settings:
    COMBAT LEVEL - STANDARD
    FLIGHT MODEL - INTERMEDIATE
    MIDAIR COLLISIONS - OFF
ALL OTHER REALISM SETTINGS - ON

    * Navigation allowance: If you have difficulty navigating around the
Red Baron world, you may turn REAL NAVIGATION off, and fly at overall
difficulty 78. This will slightly lessen your score relative to those
pilots in B-division who are flying at overall difficulty 81.

 7) You may NOT alter the custom mission files in any way, either through
Mission Builder software or sector editor software. You may NOT look at
Tournament custom mission files with Mission Builder software, DEBUG, or
any other sector editor or file lister. All missions MUST be flown with
the limited intelligence provided in the mission briefings, and the
MISSIONS.TXT file included in this Tournament pack. You are encouraged
to print out MISSIONS.TXT for reference, and for use as a checklist of
completed missions. You may not alter the aircraft performance
specifications or weapons loadouts in any way. All aircraft must be the
stock Mission Builder or Red Baron aircraft: no patched aircraft! No
flexible guns on fighters, no second gun on the Nieuport 28 or S.E.5a,
no wing strength patch on the Fokker D.VIII, no alterations to any
player-flyable or non-player-flyable aircraft are allowed. If you have
patched your aircraft, they must be returned to stock performance and
weaponry before starting the Tournament. Any of the Bob Church joystick
patches ARE allowed and may be used for the Tournament.

 8) All first, second, and third place finishers of all previous
Red Baron Tournaments are not eligible to compete in B-division.
These people include: Eric Pearson, Brian Hinkel, Tony Pham,
James Johnson, Seymour Greenberg, Mark Tupper, Randall Penn,
Steve Palmer, Ron De Iso, John Thomasovich, Vince Alonso, Ivan Luk,
Brian Wilson, Bill Cameron, Dan Scollin, Aaron Anderson, Tris Love,
Bryan Uslick, Bill McNeal, Craig Allen, Dennis Tennant, Bill Salina, and
Graeme Cree. All others are eligible to compete in either A or B
division. Winners of this Tournament will have their names placed in
    this section for future Tournaments.

 9) IMPORTANT - Do NOT post any public messages detailing your scores,
victories, or mission outcomes. Such banter prior to the closing of a
Tournament tends to discourage participation. You will be DISQUALIFIED
for disclosing any of your Tournament statistics prior to the Tournament
    CONference.

10) To enter, rename the Tournament ROSTER.DAT in which your ten mission
scores have been saved to XXXXXX.DAT, where XXXXXX represents the first
six letters of your last name. Upload this file to FSFORUM LIB 7,
Historic Air Combat. Compuserve B protocol or Kermit protocol are
preferred, as they preserve the file length at 3353 bytes (this is a
technical issue for ease of judging the Tournament). Select Binary as
your Transfer type. In the upload description, list your full name,
Red Baron Tournament 10, and the division, A or B, that you want to enter.
Be sure to list the division, even if your name is listed in section 9
above. For the upload keywords, type "RED BARON TOURNAMENT 10 DIVISION
[A or B]". For the upload title, type "Red Baron Tournament 10 entry".
Leave a message to SYSOP in FSFORUM Section 7 if you have problems
uploading. If you have questions about rules interpretations, send EMAIL
    to Bill Ciciora (73717,2274).

11) Entries must be uploaded by 23:59:59 Eastern Standard Time, Friday,
12 November 1993. Entries received after this date/time will not qualify
for the Tournament. IMPORTANT - This is not necessarily your local time.
Send a message to Bill Ciciora if you do not know the hour difference
between your local time and Eastern Standard Time. Better yet, don't
wait until the last minute to upload your entry. You will be notified
by private message or email that your file was received. If you are one
of the top three winners in either division you will be notified to ZIP
your ten Tournament tapes for upload.

12) Entries will be judged by Mike Barrs, FSFORUM MEMBER EXPERT.
Winners will be chosen by the combined total of their top eight mission
scores. Ties will be broken at the judge's discretion by comparing the
total of the bottom two mission scores, and then the value of the ninth
    place mission score.

13) Winners will be announced at the FSFORUM CONference in Room 7 on Sunday,
14 November 1993 at 9:00pm Eastern Standard Time.

14) Prizes (courtesy of Dynamix) will be awarded to the top three entrants
in each division. One prize per person. Void where prohibited.

 Good luck, and have fun!
