1: THE IMMORTAL SYNDICATE

Hello, we are the Immortal Syndicate, we are a new group who will be coding
VGA, Sound Blaster, Sound Blaster Pro, Demos.

Now we are going to tell you a bit about ourselves how we code demos, tell
you answers to questions were sure you have burning in your minds, and give
you info about upcoming releases.

To start of let's talk about the code: Code is always written in Borland
Turbo C++ 3.0, Borland Turbo Assembler, and some Pascal. We have four
coders at the time, (and don't need any more) they are Tcw, NutCracker,
Garbie Mutt, and Digital. Now to music, it is always written with great Mod
editing programs, including, Modedit 3.01, the music system is GoldPlay coded
by the CodeBlasters. At the time we only have one full time musician, but
he's amazing; Shock Wave, Pud is also a part time musician.

Grafix are an important part of our demos, and are done with an assortment of
programs, a basic outline of all grafix is cheaply (stress the cheaply) drawn
in Windows PaintBrush, this is a black and white outline. If we like what we
see, we redraw it in VGA 256 color, using Deluxe Paint ][ enhanced. All our
grafix, are drawn by Sting Ray (mostly), Garbie Mutt, Pud, or Digital.

Now a little something about our group, we are located in British Columbia,
Canada!?!?! A lot of you probably figured us Canadians had no talent, let us
prove you wrong... We formed in late 1993, and didn't plan to have a demo
out till early '95. But it is obvious that we beat that by a long ways. As
this intro (BBS Loader) was released on January, 22 '94.

We run two bulletin boards, One line on each which are open 24Hrs. per day,
the numbers for them and the distribution sites are below.

The members of the Immortal Syndicate are mostly still in school, or univer-
sity, so we are very busy with home work and all. :) But we always find time
to work on our projects and will try desperatley to keep our deadlines. If
published ahead of time.

At this time, we are working on our first demo and also working on a massive
Multi Part Mega-Demo, which will probably clock in at over a meg, their, might
be a release before that announcing the coming Mega Demo. Which will include
a couple non-tweeked effects, which you'll see in the mega-demo.
The aproximate completion time for the mega-demo is, August 30th 1994 (Garbie
Mutt's Birthday) :)

Right now we are desperatley looking for people to distribute our files.
If you would like to be a Immortal Syndicate Distribution site, then fill out
the form near the end of this package. We are now only accepting two dist.
sites per country (excluding Canada), and we need Euro, Couriers, who'll
carry our files around to every bbs they call... So if you wanna be a courier
or dist. site fill in the form at the bottom... (Couriers answer only those
that apply)

2: FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THE IMMORTAL SYNDICATE

This section is the area where we put all questions we've been asked and the
answers to the questions we think you have burning in your heads...

Q: How and Where can I get your and other groups' Demos/Intros?
A: There are a couple ways to get demos.
The best way (if you have a modem) is to call an IS distribution site
close to you. They have all of our productions online and you can
download them freely. Also many BBS' carry our productions and other
groups' demos. If you don't have a modem, then getting our demos is a
lot harder. We don't have a mailswapping system. So, if you have a friend
who has a modem, why not try to get him to call one of our distribution
sites. Another VERY good way to get demos is from the INTERNET. A very
good demo site is ftp.uwp.edu which carries probably the best demo
   collection on internet.

Q: Are you going to release a musicdisk?
A: Definitley! But probably not for a while, with lots of work going on with
this up-coming Mega-Demo we probably won't release a musicdisk till
sometime in '95, but Shock Wave is working on some songs for one...

Q: What programming books would you recommend?
A: This is a difficult question, and a general answer is, that most
books will do. You can get the basics from a book and books are
a great reference, but when it comes to creating something new,
you can't just read it from a book. We have all learned to coding
the hard way (a lot of miscellaneous books and a lot of experimenting).
Anyway, here are some of the books we often find handy

Turbo C++ For Rookies, Clayton Walnum
                Que 1993, ISBN 1-56529-473-4
(This book was used for learning the BASICS of coding, No
                 Grafix here.)
Programmers guide to EGA and VGA cards, Richard F. Ferraro
                Addison Wesley 1989, ISBN 0-201-12692-3
(This is good if you want graphic resolution, etc...)
C++ The Complete Reference, Herbert Schildt
Osborne McGraw Hill 1991, ISBN 0-07-881654-8
(Great for beginners and Advanced C++ programmers)
Programming the 80386, John H. Crawford and Patrick P. Gelsinger
                Sybex 1987, ISBN 0-89588-381-3
(Coding the best way for the 386 computer)

Q: Are you going to make games in the Future?
A: Well that is a good question, but the answer at the time is still
unproposed. We think we will stick with demo coding for at least
2 - 3 years, and then maybe hit it off with some games. But don't
get your hopes up too soon.

Q: What do the members of Immortal Syndicate do besides computers ?
A: Almost all of us are still in school, (high school) or university.
Most of us, do near two hours of homework a day. And we have to
study for tests all the time. All of us are quite normal, except
for the fact that we are smarter at computers :) than most people.
Our hobbies are movies, sports; Baseball, hockey, football, music,
   etc...

Q: What sound cards will you support?
A: At the moment our productions support the following sound cards:

Sound Blaster Pro - Because it's out there.
        Sound Blaster - Because it's a standard.

Support to the Gravis UltraSound is possible soon, our coders are working
hard on coding their own sound system and it might be ready for the big
   Mega-Demo.
don't see enough demand to support any other cards. And we will
   definitley not support Adlib! :)

Q: Why do your demos require a 386 or higher to run?
A: There are several reasons for the requirement; For example, 386 has many
new assembler commands, 32bit registers, and of course more processing
power. The 386 is just to slow to run a fast demo, like the ones we code
although some might run on a lucky 286 we don't want to take the time to
sharpen our code to work with a 286, and anywayz 286 computers are dead!

Q: What programs do you use to do your demos?
A: Well we already answered this above but here it is again.
Borland C++, Borland Pascal and of course TASM (Turbo Assembler).
For graphics we use Deluxe Paint 2 Enchanded. For making the music we
use Assorted Mod editors including Mod Edit 3.01.

Q: I'm a beginner programmer. I wonder if you could help me learn demo coding?
A: To help beginners learn the secrets of democoding we will release a fully
compilable source code to the "intro" to the coming mega-demo. The "pre-
release" It will be available for d/l from our distribution sites, when
we get around to completing it... Probably sometime in April '94.

4: DEMOS FOR COMMERCIAL USE

If you find our productions interesting and would like us to make
you one for commercial purposes, do not hesitate to contact us.

When contacting us, please, include a short explanation of
what kind of a demo you are interested in. That would greatly
help us in evaluating the size of the project.
Please include, for example, this information:

        - What kinds of effects would you be interested in
        - Should there be any colorful still-pictures (logos, etc.)
        - If the demo should have sound, which sound cards would you like
to be supported, what type of music should be played, etc.
        - How big the demo could be in kilobytes and for how long
should the demo run in minutes approximately.
        - Where would the demo be used and how soon would you like the
          demo to be finished.

We would like you to understand that our demos are not animations.
This means that nearly everything you see on the screen is being
real-time calculated. The speed of the movement is usually
dependant to the speed of the VGA card and the speed of the
        processor.

When contacting us, you should remember that we area all quite
young and are still studying in various schools. This is why
our time is usually quite limited. And it is very likely that
we might already be involved in another project. So remember
the sooner you want it, the more it's gonna cost ya... :)

You should also know that we do not make demos for Microsoft
Windows due to its limitations from a programming and graphical
        point of view.

Since normal mail is quite a slow way to communicate, we would
prefer the communication be made through bbs.

You can find our contact information above in this file.

Ŀ
6: BECOMING A DISTRIBUTION SITE & IT'S REQUIREMENTS

We are looking for distribution sites around the world.
The Board's should Be demo oriented, and the users
should have an intrest in the PC demo scene.

So, what does it take to become an IS distsite?
In fact, it's not easy, but it's not to difficult. The
Requirements are listed in the following list.

                 - Your BBS MUST have every single one production
IS or any member of IS has ever RELEASED

                - Your BBS has to call Pentium (IS WHQ) at least
once a month, and keep in contact with the IS

                - Your BBS has to be absolutely DEMO-ORIENTED, NOT
some gigantic all-around BBS. YOU yourself have
to be very interested about demos and the PC demo
                  scene in general

                 - Your BBS would also be an Immortal Syndicate information
forum. You would have to answer questions concerning
IS and our productions, and help people who have
                  problems with our software

                - Your BBS should be operated on a PC compatible,
with at least a 14400 BPS modem and 200 megabytes
of diskspace for demos, and the BBS should be open
                  24 hours a day, and 365 days / year

So what do you get in exchange? Well, these things we can
        guarantee:

                - Your BBS will be mentioned in every IS production
in the distsite BBS list, from here on in.
                - You have a chance to get all IS's future productions
                  first hand
                - You will get some IS inner circle information, not
                  for the public. :)

What we can't guarantee, but what is likely to happen, is that
your BBS will become more and more popular and it's quality
        will improve dramatically.

Please read the above rules carefully and think twice before
        sending in the application below:
