Tutorial for the HFM file manager.

This document describes some examples for the efficient use of HFM. The
userinterface of HFM has had a long development, and does not conform to
any one current statndart. Almost all operations can be invoked in several
ways. For all commands there exists a key combination. Many of them can be
useful to speed up things, but most of them are not necessary for normal
work. In the first line, there is a button bar to invoke the most common
operations. And 90% of your work can be achieved by just clicking on a
directory entry and moving it a little.

INSTALLATION: HFM can be installed on any drive. But it is NOT recommended
to install HFM anywhere else than in c:\hfm.ah. If you install in another
drive, several pathes have to bee changed in the ini files and in d.bat.
The best way to install is to unpack the zip file in a temporary directory
and then to run instal_d.bat or install_e.bat, depending on the language
you want to have. If you upgrade a earlier version of HFM you can just
copy hfm_?.exe into c:\hfm.ah. If your old version is older than v. 3.19
then it is recommended to make the following changes to the
c:\hfm.ah\hfm305.ini file:

Replace the r3 line with the drive characters where you want to have
verify. On my system writing to the floppy drives is not reliable.

Replace r5 with the path of the program starter for MS-Windows programs.

CHOOSING THE WORKING DIRECTORYS.

You have at least 10 different ways to choose the working directorys. The
following describes the method, which I use [and some variations].

1. Choose the Drive with Alt-A to Alt-Z [or click on the drive character in
line 2]
2. Go back to the root directory with BACKSPACE
3. Navigate to the requiered source directory with the f find command. For
example go to hfm.ah with f h . a RETURN. If h . a does not bring you to
the right directory you can edit the string with BACKSPACE or go to the
next entry with CursorDown.
4. Switch to the second window with Cursor_Right or Cursor_Left [Click on
the other filelist]
5. Choose the target directory as above.
6. Back to the first window.
If HFM is configured correctly, the directory can be the archive of a
archiving program. (Configuration files for ARJ, ARC, LHA, ZIP and ZOO
archives are included)

HFM uses 2 windows for copy and rename operations, if you do not specify
another path, the second window is the target directory.

MOVING IN THE FILELIST:

PgUp or PgDown or SPACE [click on the right part of the windowframe], or
use the F find command.

DELETING:
One file:
Click on the directory entry and drag it to the bottom of the screen. If
the file is not on the current screen use the find command first. End
finding with SPACE. A RETURN would show the file content or start a
executable file.

Several files:
Choose as above, mark the files with the F8 command. Delete all marked
files with the Ctrl-D command. Ctrl-C and Ctrl-R work equivalent for
copying and moving to the second window.

All unaltered files from a program installation:
I have installed Borland pascal and want to get rid of Turbo pascal and
Turbo pascal for windows.
1: Choose one file in the directory tree
2. Ctrl-E
3. Acknowledge that all files in the tree with the same time should be
deleted.

SYNCRONIZING OF DIRECTORYS AND BACKUPS:
I worked on HFM and want to copy the changed files to a floppy, wich has
not enough room for the complete HFM directory. I have two options:
1. Mark all changed files with F8[they are highlighted by HFM], copy with
Ctrl-C
2. Drag the . directory entry to the target window. Answer U RETURN when
asked how to copy the tree. This will copy all files wich exist in the
target tree but are newer in the source tree. The answer S RETURN would
copy everything wich is not in the target tree in a up to date version.

FAST OVERVIEW FOR SEVERAL FILES:
1. Choose the first file with the mouse or the F find command or the mouse.
Look into the files with the N or L command. [Drag the file a littlebit to
the right.]

START OF A MS-WINDOWS PROGRAM FROM HFM:
Choose the program or its datafile. Start the program with the W command.

To use this function the run18 package has to be installed. (run18.zip is
included with HFM.) The following has to be defined in c:\hfm.ah\hfm305:

[Windows Programmstart]
c:\hfm.ah\run.exe

[Programmstart durch(A,^A,W) von (1) Pfad bei (2) Extension)]
[12 von maximal 20 Programmen]

EXE
c:\hfm.ah\run c:\winword\winword
DOC

The EXE entry with no program defined (blank line over EXE) is necessary
for passing the right parameters to c:\hfm.ah\run.exe.
