*** REQUIREMENTS ***

This program requires Westwood Studios Dune II game version 1.0.
Other versions of Dune II have not been tested as of this release.

If you have a version of Dune II other than ver. 1.0 please contact me.
You can reach me at CIS 74757,1014 or call me at home, (912) 453-8480,
evenings 6 to 9 PM EST.

I want to provide every Dune II user the opportunity to use the editor,
regardless of which version of Dune II you have. Therefore, I ask users
of other versions to call me, so that I can provide you with a product
that will meet your needs.

Also, since this is a BETA TEST COPY please report any "bugs" you may
encounter. If the program crashes please make note of the error and address
stated, if any. If your saved game data file structure does not match the
struture for Dune II ver 1.0 the program may terminate while trying to load
the selected file.

Please contact me with any problems encountered while using this program.
Also, any comments on improving the program are desired as well.

*** INSTALLATION ***

Unzip the file EDDUNE15.ZIP.

Copy the unzipped files to your Dune II subdirectory. ( C:\WESTWOOD\DUNE2 )

The next step is not required because I have made every effort to keep your
original files safe and entact. But it couldn't hurt as a saftey measure.
Backup all your saved game files, they look like this "_SAVExxx.DAT", where
xxx is a number from 000 to 999.

Run the program by typing "EDDUNE15"

*** DOCUMENTATION ***

I am not well versed at writing documentation, so comments or suggestions
will help me to produce a better product for you.

User Manual in Brief, a walk through.

Start the program in the Dune II subdirectory or any subdirectory where the
saved game files are located. Read the information on the title screen, then
  press any key to continue.

The top two lines of every screen will be menu selections, user instructions
or a data entry section. The main body of the screen will contain the infor-
mation you are working with. The lower window boundary will show you which
file you are working on, that is after you select a file to edit.

You will now see the main menu screen with the FILE option highlighted. Use
arrow keys to change highlighted option. When desired option is highlighted
use the enter key to select that submenu. For now highlight FILE and press
  the enter key.

You now have three options LOAD, SAVE, or RESTORE. Highlight the LOAD option
  and press enter.

The program scans the current directory for saved game files. Soon you will
see a list of _SAVE###.DAT filenames with the one in the upper left corner
highlighted. Also, at the bottom of the window you will see a brief descrip-
tion of that file. Namely the description you entered from the Dune II game,
mission level(3 to 9) and your house and your enemy's house(s). Note: Atr =
Atrides, Ord = Ordos, Har = Harkonnen, Fre = Fremen, and Emp = Emperor. Use
the arrow keys to highlight a fill you wish to edit. Now press enter or the
ESC key to confirm your choice. After the file data loads into memory press
the ESC key to get back to the main menu.

Highlight the EDIT option and press enter. You now see the edit submenu of
things to edit: GENERAL, UNITS, BUILDING, and MAP. Highlight and select
  GENERAL.

You see the general information that you can edit. Use the arrow key to
highlight an item in the max units column or the credits column. Press the
enter key and read message at top of screen about what to do. Enter a number
in the data entry area and press enter. If you made an invalid entry, you
are prompted again to enter data. Once valid data is entered you will see it
update in the main screen area. Make any other desired changes you want. Now
press the ESC key to return to the edit submenu, select UNITS.

The unit information seen will normally be one page of several pages. The
current page and number of pages is diplayed right after the unit informa-
tion. Use the page-up and page-down keys to change the page. Use the arrow
keys to highlight the item to be changed, house or hit points. Press enter
to change the highlighted item. Follow instruction at the top of the screen.
Make as many changes as you like on all the available pages. When done,
press the ESC key. Now select BUILDING.

The building information seen is very similar to the unit information. You
can edit the building information in the same way as the unit information
was changed. Remember there are several pages of information. Make any
changes you like. Press ESC to return to the edit submenu. Now on to the
  MAP option.

Once you have selected the MAP option, you will see about the top two-thirds
of the map for the mission selected. Use the page-up or page-down key to
toggle between the top and bottom portions of the map. The map will look
similar to the radar map that is shown in the game. All structures will be
shown in their house colors: Atr - Blue, Ord - Green, Har - Red, and Emp -
Magenta. Building name is spelled out in abbreviated form. Buildings in
unexplored areas will be blinking. Information at the top of the sreen will
assist you in editing the map. Also, you will be able to directly load the
paste buffer with any home team wall piece or slab, see bottom right side of
screen. Make any changes you want, have fun. Note: you can only edit
explored area at this time, I am working on a way to edit unexplored areas.
When you are finished editing the map, press the ESC key twice to return to
  the main menu.

At this time you have only edited the file in memory, nothing permanent has
been changed. If you like the changes made then save the information into a
file, else go back to the file load section and reload the file. If you
reload a file before saving it you will be asked to save the file in memory
first. If wish to save the file answer "Y" else answer "N". There are two
ways to save the file. One is to go to the file submenu and select save. The
other is to exit the program. When exiting the program and your file has not
been saved you will be prompted to save the file. Answer "Y" to save the
file, else "N" to not save and exit.

Now you can play the edited saved game. Some of the changes made may not be
obvious, whereas others will be noticed immediately.

  Have fun and enjoy.
