13-Mar David Lewis Vikram Chandra Help: Sony CD errors!

Here's the message about the adjustment to fix Sony CDU31A CD-Rom units (the
ones GW sells) that have problems reading some disks.

I asked Neil if this voided the GW warranty, and he told me to go ahead and try
it. But you'll have to make your own determination.

I actually adjusted the potentiometer a tad less than 1/4 turn, figuring that
since my unit worked on many roms and failed on maybe 30%, it only needed a
slight tweak. Luckily that did it. If it doesn't, I imagine you may have to
remove/replace it more than once, but that is better than swapping in a whole
new unit, which might take weeks to arrive and could still have the *same*
problem.

Problem reports with SONY 31A

Aris Entertainment has received numerous problem reports with the SONY 31A
drive not being able to read several of our CD-ROM discs, as well as those
produced by other publishers. Thanks to one of our technically astute end
users, here's a solution (not tested or approved by SONY yet) that may help fix
the drive This should only be necessary if you have discs that won't read.

1. Remove the bottom cover from the drive.

2. You will see 4 pots (potentiometers) inline in the corner

3. Adjust the pot labeled "F bias" about 1/4 turn clockwise.

4. This adjustment is a work/not work adjustment, so trial and error testing is
necessary.

5. Continue adjusting a small amount additionally clockwise after the World
View (7/92 version) begins working. This is necessary to make other discs work
as well.

Aris has not tested this yet, but according to our end user who owns four SONY
31A drives, only one that would read our disc, this should fix the problem.
Keep in mind, this procedure may void the SONY warrantee and Aris makes no
claims nor recommendations for using or attempting this fix. Further questions
may be directed to Aris Entertainment at (310) 821-0234.
